For adventurous travelers seeking an even more immersive experience in Antarctica, we are excited to introduce a bold new activity: Long Hikes. This is your opportunity to experience Antarctica on foot in a way few travelers ever do, guided by elite polar professionals.
A different way to discover Antarctica
These hikes offer a deeper journey into the Antarctic wilderness. Depending on terrain and weather, they may participate in a single extended hike of several hours. If this is not possible due to inclement weather, alternative shorter hikes will be offered where local conditions permit. Each outing is shaped by safety, conditions, and the character of the site, no two hikes will ever be the same. From windswept ridges to hidden volcanic valleys, these hikes are designed to bring you into closer contact with Antarctica’s raw, untouched beauty.
Where will we hike?
Long hikes take place in carefully selected regions along the Antarctic Peninsula, including areas within the South Shetland Islands and the Weddell Sea region. Each site is chosen based on accessibility, safety, and its potential to offer a rewarding and challenging hiking experience. Elevation gain, surface conditions, and route duration vary, but all routes offer stunning panoramas and a rare sense of solitude.
Exact hiking sites will be confirmed based on daily conditions and expedition logistics, ensuring safety and compliance with environmental guidelines.
Safety is paramount
Because these hikes go beyond traditional cruise landings, we take extra measures to ensure your safety:
- Each group is led by certified mountain guides
- Routes are carefully assessed in real-time and may overlap with mountaineering terrain
- Participation is limited and subject to guide approval based on fitness and readiness
Guest participation requirements
This activity is suitable for guests who are:
- Physically fit and capable of hiking for several hours over steep, uneven, and potentially slippery terrain
- Free from medical conditions that could pose a safety risk during extended physical activity
- Comfortable hiking in remote and challenging environments for up to 6 hours
Group size is capped at 24 participants, divided into smaller subgroups of approximately 12, to ensure personalized guidance and safe management.
What to expect?
- Toilets: There are no facilities ashore; guests are strongly encouraged to use the ship beforehand. Pee bottles and “shewee” devices will be provided, and all waste must be returned to the vessel.
- Food: Meals or snacks cannot be distributed ashore. Guides will carry emergency rations, and guests are advised to eat well before departure
A true expedition experience
Long hikes are for guests who want to engage with Antarctica on a deeper level, physically, mentally, and emotionally. These treks are challenging but deeply rewarding, offering rare access to dramatic landscapes and a sense of true exploration.
If you're ready to push your limits and walk paths few have ever tread, this experience will become a defining memory of your polar journey.
